I know you all know that I love Romantic Comedies, but I have to admit, psychological thrillers are also becoming one of my favorite genres of books. Especially when it’s a good psychological thriller.
You know what I’m talking about, right? The thrillers where you honestly have no idea what’s going to happen? You get to the end of the book and you have to just process what happened?
Those are the type of psychological thrillers that I have fallen in love with. And I can assure you- Lie to Me by J.T. Ellison is one of those books that will leave you dumb founded at the end.
I have to say, at first I was skeptical of this book. At the time I had been reading it, it seemed like a copy cat of Gone Girl.
No, seriously… I texted my friend who was asking for book suggestions and I told her I was in the middle of Lie to Me by J.T. Ellison but it reminded me of Gone Girl and that I was hoping for it to make a twist soon.
Let me tell you- it made a twist.
*I am in no way compensated for providing this book review that contains my truthful thoughts regarding this book.
Overview of Lie to Me by J.T. Ellison
Before I get too far into this book and why it was so amazing, let me give you a bit of an overview. Ethan and Sutton Montclair were seen as a perfect literary couple. They had the gorgeous house, the incredible careers as writers and the ideal marriage. What everyone didn’t know is that their life wasn’t all it was made out to be.
Ethan and Sutton were struggling through financial troubles, immense grief, blame and jealousy. Then one day Sutton disappears and when the investigators start digging, Ethan is the obvious suspect. This book takes you on a thrilling ride of slowly understanding what happened in the past to make the once perfect couple crumble. And what was happening now, to make everything come to light.
The Characters
The characters in this book were incredibly well written. They weren’t the characters that you fall in love with instantly. They ware the characters you immediately hate. And I can assure you this goes for both Sutton and Ethan.
I didn’t like either one of them at the beginning. Until I realized toward the middle that yes, they made mistakes but the reason I didn’t like them was because they were human…
What do I mean by that? I mean they acted in ways that just about every human being on Earth has acted. Jealous, immature, gullible, lying, you name it they did it.
But I can assure you, once I had that realization, I understood more where they were coming from and I softened to both of them more as the book went on.
I can’t give away too much about the characters without giving away the major plot twist that occurs in this book but just know that the supporting characters are amazing. They were written in such a way that I liked them and you as a reader trusted them.
Even the investigator 😉
The Good, the Bad, the Ugly of Lie to Me by J.T. Ellison
I have to admit, I don’t really have anything “ugly” to say about this book. Something that could be found as “bad” about this book were the similarities early on in the book to that of Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn (affiliate link). That gave me a pause and I truly had to think about if I wanted to continue the book. And I assure you- I AM SO GLAD THAT I DID FINISH IT!
The ending and the plot twist were all worth the wait. I literally talked to my mom for 30 minutes about this book when walking our dogs. And when I say “talked” I mean I gushed about how great the plot twist was. I personally had absolutely no clue what had happened until it was happening.
And to me- that makes any book worth their weight in gold.
